its been rainy here this week but those leaf colors kiiiinda make up for it. we’re sticking around here this weekend (finally!). my sister is coming for a visit so i’m sure we’ll be eating a lot of candy, watching netflix and laughing way too much be enjoying the weather and halloweening.

»don’t know when my design aesthetic evolved/ broadened but when can i move in?

»a few serena & lily things:

»how to find your own style

»we are toying with the idea of hosting thanksgiving here and if we do, i think i need to finally bite the bullet.

»starting to form thoughts (perhaps even darker grout?) on a phase 1 bathroom reno. (sidenote- our house is c 1926 but has a small addition with a full, yet tiny, bathroom. it has been updated .1% aka they painted the wall/ shower tile, which isn’t horrible but pretty bad. but the kicker is the 1968 floor tile. its that shades of yellow/ beige and different size square look. super chic. 😐 sooo to make the bathroom a little more bearable until we can really make it pretty, i’d like to put new floor tile in, paint the vanity (which is currently some sort of light wood) and paint the walls. or maybe if i’m feeling sassy maybe some dramatic wallpaper (here, here, here) ?

the new bohemians: cool and collected homes- justina blakeney

while this isn’t a design book i’d normally pick up, i’m always open to getting out of my comfort zone. and i’m glad i did- i really enjoyed this book.

justina blakeney did such a beautiful job putting this book together- the pictures are gorgeous and the spaces are so cool. i love the color, the collected aspect, textile mixing and the organic touches.

i feel that sometimes these sort of books can be a little word heavy (let’s be real- pictures > words, in this case) but she includes short and sweet little blurbs about each space. sprinkled throughout are a series of “adopt an idea”s- which helps translate each style into your own home- and “diy”s that are totally doable and inexpensive.

happy saturday from charleston! i sure have missed this place. we’ve been doing all of my favorite things and the weather has been perfect. we’re headed home tomorrow just in time for peak weekend (!!!) and fun halloween activities.

here are a few good links from this week.

»i have a confession- i am one of those people who are OBSESSED with christmas. and yes, i may or may not like to start the celebrating right after halloween. in my defense, i like to think that thanksgiving and christmas are part of the “holiday season”- the food, family, coziness and excitement just roll into one big super holiday for me! so haters, SHH 😉 anyways, i was really excited to see one kings lane has a great event up, just in time for november 1st the holidays! also, can’t wait to get my hands on this!

»(one more christmas item) just bought this and cannot wait to use it. i have so many ideas!!

»worth a look!

curated

i can just hear my sister laughing right now but i love the word ‘curated’.  to me it means the perfect balance of everything you love with great layering and looking gathered, all while feeling easy. there are so many great designers out there right now who just get it. i feel like sometimes things can look so forced and stiff but it takes the right amount of all of the ingredients listed above to make a room perfect.

here are some images i just can’t stop thinking about.

happy friday! it’s supposed to be below freezing here this weekend. not really sure i’m ready for that. especially since we haven’t gotten our fireplace in complete working order. i’m supposed to be going to high point market this weekend but not sure how to make it work since we’re headed to charleston on monday (!!!) hope everyone has a great weekend!

weekend edition

one thing i'm not looking forward to? the leaves in our yard! happy first weekend of fall! after being in charleston for six years, i’m excited for the crisp weather and amazing foliage! not going to lie though, it’s a little bittersweet. i sure do miss charleston.

it looks like the weather will be pretty cool here this weekend but rainy- yuck! sounds like a good weekend to curl up, watch netflix and drink this. but we are going to try to go to a couple fun fall events (this and this).
(ps-let’s NOT talk about how many leaves are going to be on our lawn in the next few weeks. side eye to you, huge maple trees.)

on my radar

i’m always (trying to!) brainstorming new, creative material to share on my blog. i’m attempting to become more organized with my thoughts, ideas and posts and perhaps having set topics for certain days will help- fingers crossed! In the next few weeks, i’ll slowly start to incorporate new series.

“on my radar” series will highlight little finds, images and/or design related articles and tidbits i’ve found throughout the week. hope you like it!

omr 9.8

1. a sneak peek of Threshold’s fall collection.

2. copper accents for the kitchen.

3. lusting after this. (sidenote- you cannot beat the selection, price and quality over at minted.com)

4. we have a bathroom renovation to tackle and would love to use these. (also, check out studio mcgee’s post “10 under $10”– cheap tiles- that look good!- are hard to find!)

pretty organizing + weekend pancakes

two elements that inspire me to cook/ bake are easy access and being pretty. when we moved into this house, we had to get creative due to lack of a pantry so we decided to use this cool 1850’s heart pine cabinet that we used to use as book storage in our old house. it now houses baby stuff, cookbooks, pantry items and baking supplies. but with all of the different flours, sugars and other baking ingredients, they were looking super cluttered = no cooking/baking for me. i found a bunch of glass canisters on amazon, some labels (similar herethese are cute- so are these!) and got organizing. this simple fix has made such a huge difference.

while i was on my organizing/ prettifying the pantry spree, i decided to take it a step further and made my own pancake mix to put in a leftover canister. i don’t know about y’all but it seems so much better (and cheaper!) than buying a box of mix.

weekend pancakes recipe:
6 cups of flour
1 cup of sugar
3 tablespoons of baking powder
1 tablespoon of salt
-keep mix in a sealed container. this recipe will make three batches of 18-4 inch pancakes (pheww that was a mouthful!)

-when ready to use:
pour 2 1/4 cup of mix into large mixing bowl. make a well in the dry ingredients and add 2 beaten eggs, 2 cups milk and 1/4 cup canola oil and mix. (there will be a few lumps in the batter.) lightly oil griddle and heat over medium heat. pour 1/4 cup batter for each pancake. cook until bubbles form on surface, about three minutes. flip and cook an additional one- two minutes.

(i put a label with instructions on the back.)
how great would this be for a housewarming, hostess gift or included in an engagement gift basket?

happy weekend!

feeling green

when you have a baby, everything changes- i know, i know, SO cliche buuut its true. you start to be more aware of what you put in/on your body, what you’re breathing, pesticides, new rugs giving off fumes- you get the picture. (side note- i promise i’m not that crazy mom who obsesses about all that and i haven’t gone completely green/non toxic but i do try to do little things here and there to help the balance. ie- a smarter diaper choice- so much love for the honest company, air purifying plants, natural fiber rugs.)

since we live in a 90 year old house with all hardwood floors, we had a lot of ground to cover (pun intended) and by that i mean we had to go on a rug shopping spree.

new wool and cotton rugs + (not shown) new rug pad
living room- new wool and cotton rugs + (not shown) new rug pad

we found some great rugs but after a couple days, i realized we were in desperate need of some rug pads. in the past i used those cheap rubber ones that smelled weird and left a really cute imprint- sorry, buyers! so i was on the lookout for some that were softer and less chemical-y, when i came across rugpadusa.com. they are low VOC, custom and super comfy. i ended up picking this rug pad (1/2 inch) for our bedroom and living room. let’s just say i’d sleep on them if need be!

bedroom- new rug + new rug pad

do yourself a favor- head on over to their site and grab a couple! [ps- use AUG10 for 10% off!]

while rugpadusa.com gifted me these awesome rug pads, all opinions are my own!

serena & lily

just a quick hello and a few of my favorite picks from serena & lily’s private sale. there are some amazing things (think rugs, wallpaper, baby items, lighting, etc, etc!) for up to 60% off!! also, take an additional 20% off with code ‘bonus20’. there’s a couple days left, so hurry!
